I just detected a gas leak which seems to be coming from my fireplace gas valve. All connections seem to be tight so I assume it is coming from the valve. Is replacement of the valve the only option?

Our Answer:

Most gas valves have a jam nut that holds the valve stem tightly in position. The nut can back off over time, which allows the stem to become loose, causing a gas leak. I recommend checking the nut before replacing the valve. A deep well socket will be needed to reach the nut.
