Given the projection of this shelf and how far it would still be projecting at each edge of your fireplace, I do believe using a fireplace hood would be redundant in this case. The shelf on its own should offer good protection of the television.

Just recently, I was looking at a fireplace hood to shield the heat from my gas logs, as I have a 55" LED TV mounted above my fireplace. It's an all brick fireplace with a brick hearth. The opening of the fireplace is 35-1/2" wide. This mantel shelf is 60" long, and at it's widest point, is around 10". Do you think that this item would be appropriate to shield the heat from my TV, or would I need a fireplace hood (in addition)?
