Our Answer:

We do indeed carry universal keys that are designed to operate both 1/4 and 5/16 inch gas stems. However, because the home is older, the shutoffs may not use a standard square stem. I recommend checking the stems for shape. You will likely need a flashlight to do so. If they are square, they should be one of the two sizes above. The only way to be certain would be to unscrew the decorative covers for each valve and measure the stem on the valve.

How can I tell what kind of a key would need to be purchased in order to use these two gas devices? Is there a universal key that could turn on any gas device? Mind you, this is an older home, and I have a feeling that both devices are just as old.
