Do I need to purchase the control panel or can this burner be operated with the electric piezo ignition? There is not a description on the control panel that is suggested when I try to purchase.

You can operate burner with the electric piezo ignition. However the DIY Control Panel gives you better control over your fire pit, more convenience and precision operation.
