Would one of our regular masonry sealants do the same job as this for a chimney crown?

Our Answer:

Standard masonry sealant can indeed be used for a chimney crown, as long as the crown does not have any large cracks or holes in the crown. The Crownseal product can be applied in a thick coating, approximately 1/8 of an inch deep, which is designed to fill and seal any open cracks. As such, it is not needed for every application.
