Does vent-free gas fireplaces have only a gas connection and no other openings for a chimney or other vent connection?

Our Answer:

Manufactured (metal) vent free fireplaces do indeed lack a chimney or external vent of any sort. They will recirculate and heat room air, using a precision burner system that avoids releasing harmful amounts of carbon monoxide into the room. Vent free gas logs can also be purchased and installed into an existing firebox. If the firebox is a model that has a chimney, be it masonry or manufactured, the chimney must still be present and in good working order. This is because the damper is not an air tight seal and some heat will escape. As such, the chimney must be in place to funnel it safely out.
