Our Answer:

Most wood-burning units have provisions to install gas logs. However, removing the entire unit in order to install a direct vent fireplace would be a different affair. Depending on the model and manufacturer of the existing wood burning fireplace, you may be able to retrofit the chimney system for use with direct vent gas piping. If the existing chimney system must come down, you may consider venting horizontally through an outside wall, if this is possible. This would save on materials and labor to erect a new venting system.
