Why is my Flame Fireplace that was converted to gas logs rusting?

Our Answer:

One byproduct of combustion is water vapor. Gas log sets produce a higher amount of water vapor when operating, when compared to a wood burning fire. The issue can be exacerbated by higher levels of relative humidity inside the house. Because of this, corrosion to the body of the fireplace can be accelerated, due to constant contact with the residual moisture. I recommend cleaning, sanding, and repainting the metal chassis with a high heat paint, prior to using it any further.
