Is a fireplace insert supposed to use a grate?

Our Answer:

In a word, no. Woodburning inserts are specially designed to not use a grate. The firebox of woodburning inserts are far and wide too small to allow a grate to fit. More importantly, inserts themselves are made to be highly efficient appliances. A grate is simply not needed.
