Our Answer:

Indeed, this does sound like an issue with something in the fireplace behind or above the insert. As the unit heats the space around it, it brings out the odor in the surrounding area. I'd recommend having the unit pulled out and the installation inspected. I do not believe a new insert will automatically cure the problem.

In Response to Question:

I have an insert that is 8 years old. The previous owners could never use it due to the acrid smell that would start about 15 minutes after lighting it. It has a blower that is vented to the outside but it doesn't help. Some people have suggested that there may be building dust or materials left on top of the unit and that is what may be causing the problem. Do you have any suggestions? Will a new insert fix the problem?
