What is the difference between a non-circulating and circulating fireplace?

Our Answer:

A circulating fireplace will have louvers manufactured into the face of the unit. This allows for natural convection of heat from the unit when it is being used and also allows the use of an electric blower to further aid convection. A non-circulating unit will have a smooth faced surround with no louvers or vents. This type of unit will not allow the use of a fan and provides radiant heat only. The advantage is that this unit allows non-combustible material, such as stone or tile, to be installed over the face of the unit.
