When is insulation required? I have an existing masonry chimney with clay liners 9"x13". To insert a 6" liner for a wood burning wood stove, do I need insulation wrap?

Our Answer:

The guidelines for insulating a liner are based on the size and location of the flue. If the area of the flue is more than twice the liner, you will need to insulate. Also, if the chimney is on an exterior wall, insulation is strongly recommended or if the chimney has had prior draft problems. Due to the area of your flue, it would be recommended to use insulation.
