Our Answer:

Type 1 and Type 2 are both referring to the UL1618 code, which covers wall protectors, floor protectors, and hearth extensions that are intended for use with heat producing devices, such as fireplaces, fireplace stoves, fireplace inserts, and solid-fuel type room heaters. Either board can be used against a wall, but if you are using it on the floor, there is a difference. The Type 1 board is going to offer protection from embers potentially falling on it and some thermal protection, but the Type 2 is going to offer that ember resistance and more thermal protection than the Type 1. Be sure to check the owner's manual of your appliance, as some manufacturers require a Type 2 board. If in doubt, it is safer to go with the Type 2 board.
