I am looking for a gas insert for an existing wood fireplace. Will a Class A vent free work? Do I want a direct vent unit? I am looking for the least cost and the highest efficiency for an emergency heat source for our house in case of power outages.

Our Answer:

We have a variety of both vent-free and direct vent inserts on our site. You can see both at the following links: Vent Free Fireplace Inserts Direct Vent Fireplace Inserts Cost is similar, but vent-frees are a bit more economic, especially when you consider that you will need no additional venting components, as you would with a direct vent insert. Vent-frees also have remarkable efficiency ratings - up to 99% - as there is nowhere for the heat to go except into the room that you are heating. While the blowers on all inserts require electricity to operate, most of them utilize millivolt controls, so you would be able to use them without power.
