I have this space heater and it keeps making loud metallic sounds. I have had the gas company out three times to check it. It's scaring me to death! What can it be?

Our Answer:

The sound you are hearing is commonly called "oil canning". If the unit is fairly new, this can occur for the first several times the unit is burned. It is important to burn the unit for at least one hour on maximum temperature settings when new, to allow the heater components to shape and conform. If this has never been done, you will need to try this to see if the problem is alleviated. If this continues to happen, there may be an improperly installed shield or panel that is expanding and making the noise. This can usually be adjusted to relieve the pressure and fix the noise.
