We have a vent free fireplace in the basement and have just built a master bedroom with loft - approx. 550 sq ft. Is it safe and legal to have a vent free in the bedroom? Right now our fireplace downstairs is always turned off -no pilot light on.

Our Answer:

Vent free fireplaces are indeed legal to use in a bedroom, as long as the BTU rating does not exceed 10,000. Given the square footage of the room, this would only provide some supplemental heat. For better heating of the room, you may want to consider a direct vent model, if the setup of the home permits.
