What to do about odors from unvented heaters?

Our Answer:

While unvented heaters may produce some odor it is not normal for the odor to be over powering or overly noticeable. However, a "burn in" is necessary to burn off the oils and lubricants used during assembly. It is recommended to open a few windows to alleviate an additional odors during the burn in. Often, strong, unpleasant odors generated by these heaters are the result of incorrect gas pressure or a defect in the unit. Also, because these heaters pull combustion air from their surroundings, any chemicals or fumes in the air will be pulled into the heater and combusted.
