If I directly hook up a chimney liner to the insert, do I need to insulate the liner in the masonry chimney?

While it is recommended to insulate chimney liners, it is not a requirement. Insulation will maintain the high flue temperatures needed for a strong draft. It will also provide appropriate clearance to combustibles.
