I'm looking for a strong grate that withstands normal fireplace temperatures. My last two grates melted and bowed in toward the middle within a couple of weeks. Is cast iron better made than steel grates?

Our Answer:

Generally, it is the other way around. Cast iron grates can last for quite some time, if they are a good quality. Many grates that are cast nowadays are very porous in nature and fail quickly. A good quality cast iron grate can withstand normal fireplace usage. Diamond steel grates are a significant upgrade that are designed to withstand more frequent usage and very high temperatures.
