How do I know what size smoke rollout eliminator to get?

Our Answer:

Ideally, you want the ratio of your fireplace opening to flue size to be 10:1. In order to purchase the correct rollout eliminator, you would need to calculate the number of square inches of your opening, in comparison to your flue, then determine how many inches the opening needs to be reduced. Another way of checking this would be to build a fire, then use a piece of noncombustible material to simulate a smoke guard. You would need to have something wide enough to span the entire front of the fireplace that you could gradually lower over the opening until the fireplace stops smoking. You would then need to purchase the smoke guard that is closest in size.
