I have asthma, sometimes smoke from a fireplace bothers me. Do the newer stoves emit fumes? They seem to be sealed tightly. I would like to have an alternative to our fuel oil furnace.

Our Answer:

The new stoves are indeed completely air tight and have only a small inlet for combustion air that does not allow smoke to back puff. If the stove's chimney system is set up properly, you should not have any issues with smoke at all. However, if the chimney is too short or is unprotected from high winds, you may get the occasional back puff of smoke when the stove door is opened for loading.
