Our Answer:

The lack of a damper will indeed cause poor heating performance from a fireplace such as this. This Vestal damper assembly is indeed the correct size for your needs, however it may be difficult to install this properly, due to the way the ceiling of the firebox is constructed. A brick mason will need to cut slots into the brick and install metal supports on either side of the damper assembly to hold it in position. He will then need to build a framework around the perimeter of the firebox ceiling and use firebrick and mortar to bridge the gap between the outer frame and the damper throat. Another option to resolve the issue would be to have a round damper flap fabricated out of stainless steel. This would look similar to a stovepipe damper, but much larger. You would then need to attach mounting brackets on either side of the flue to give the damper support rod something to attach to. You could then mount the damper into position and attach a control rod for operation. I believe this would be the better option, as installation of the Vestal damper would require a lot of fabrication and brick work.

In Response to Question:

We have an outdoor "firerock" stone fireplace that does not have a damper. We like to light the fire in the winter, but we feel virtually NO HEAT coming from the fireplace. All the heat goes up the flue since there is no damper installed. The measurements of the fire brick are 32" wide in the front, 26" wide in the back and 15.5" from front to back center. There is an additional 1" to 1.5" behind brick. Is the Vestal 24 inch Cast Iron Throat-Style Fireplace Damper the correct item we need to resolve this problem? Will we be able to install it ourselves? Can you give us your suggestions? (see attached pictures)
