the surround on my Majestic gas insert is about two inches short on the top. What can I put there to fill the gap? Also, the sides are within one inch of wood trim. Is this an acceptable clearance?

Our Answer:

It is my assumption that you are using the Majestic Topaz insert. If this is correct, the clearances from the edges of the insert's viewing area to the wood trim must be 10 inches in total. This clearance cannot be reduced in any way. Normally, the trim closure kit could be used to expand the overall size of the surround and conceal any gaps. However, it sounds as if any additional width would be an issue in your case. Because of this, my recommendation would be either fabricate a surround extension using sheet metal to extend the top of the existing surround, or raise the unit up within the fireplace, using pavers. You could then fill the bottom gap with a noncombustible material of your choosing.
