Our Answer:

Both types have advantages and drawbacks. A stainless steel fireback is more effective at radiating heat into the room while the fire is burning, but does not offer any heat after the fire has gone out. They are also thinner and can warp over time. Cast iron fire backs only radiate a small amount of heat into the room, but retain more heat and will continue to radiate it into the room after the fire has gone out. Because they are thicker, they tend to last longer and do a better job of protecting the brick behind them.
